First Nations Platform Will Rebuild Respect, Trust and Relationships

A Yukon NDP government will reset government-to-government relations with all Yukon First Nations, including those who have not signed land claim settlements, by honouring aboriginal rights and titles and First Nation Final and Self-Government Agreements. We will work with Yukon First Nations to:

  • develop modern successor mining legislation, that includes a mechanism for royalty sharing with First Nations and meets commitments set out in Final Agreements
  • extend Yukon Asset Construction Agreement clauses in Final Agreements, and provide this concept to open more economic opportunities to all Yukon First Nations, including those without Final Agreements
  • explore feasibility of the Yukon First Nations Chamber of Commerce proposal to create a private equity fund with First Nation development corporations that will invest in infrastructure in the Yukon
  • implement the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
  • implement the United Nations Declaration of Rights of Indigenous People while respecting Final Agreements
  • take a participatory approach to territorial budget-making to ensure First Nation priorities for territorial capital and program expenditures are included
  • implement recommendations of the Auditor General with regards to child welfare services, which address the over-representation of First Nations children and youth in care
  • address complex issues of trauma, addictions, suicide, healing, and youth mental ill health
  • support the preservation and revitalization of Yukon’s Indigenous languages

“This is just the tip of the iceberg. Our approach to our platform reflects our approach to governing – we have taken every opportunity to address reconciliation in all areas of government. I am proud to highlight key issues today, but when we release platform soon, you will see First Nation issues and priorities are in every aspect, as it should be,” said Liz Hanson, leader of the Yukon NDP.
