Shaunagh Stikeman is running for the NDP because she believes in building respectful relations with First Nations, growing the local economy in a fair and environmentally responsible manner, and giving a voice in government to families, seniors and all Yukoners. Shaunagh is looking forward to advocating for issues important to Mountainview residents.

Shaunagh is a proud Yukoner and lawyer who lives in Hillcrest with her Anishinaabe husband, Kevin MacGillivray, and their three children. Since making Whitehorse her home in 2011, Shaunagh acted as legal counsel for Yukon First Nations advancing economic interests, managing land and resource development, and advocating for the protection of Aboriginal and Treaty rights. She is currently employed with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada helping to negotiate administration of justice agreements with Yukon First Nations as an important step towards Reconciliation.

Shaunagh completed her BA Honours in Women’s Studies and Political Science from McGill University and began her career in the non-profit sector promoting education for girls in sub-Saharan Africa. Seeking tools to create change, Shaunagh obtained her law degree from the University of Victoria, with a focus on constitutional law. During her legal studies, she worked for Ecojustice advocating for environmental protection in Canada, and researched equality rights with the Social Rights and Accountability Research Project. Following law school, Shaunagh obtained a prestigious position as law clerk for the Justices of the Supreme Court of British Columbia, affording her valuable insights into the justice system. Shaunagh went on to litigate for Justice Canada, appearing before the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the Federal Court of Canada and the Tax Court of Canada.

Shaunagh is fluently bilingual and a proud parent of children at École Emilie Tremblay. In the community, Shaunagh has held roles as an active board member with the Yukon Film Society, Garderie du petit cheval blanc, Cross-Country Yukon and Montessori Borealis, and fundraised for Muscular Dystrophy with Run for Our Sons.
